Temporal is JavaScript's new built-in date and time API. It reached Stage 4 at TC39 in March 2026, making it part of ECMAScript 2026, and it's enabled by default in Node.js 26. It fixes the long-standing problems with Date: mutability, confusing time zones, zero-indexed months, and no real way to represent "just a date" or "just a time".
Why Date has always been painful
- Months start at 0, so
new Date(2026, 9, 14)is October 14. Dateobjects are mutable, so a function can silently change a date you passed in.- Time zone handling is limited to UTC and the machine's local zone.
- There's no type for "a calendar date with no time", which is exactly what birthdays, bookings and due dates are.
What Temporal looks like
// A plain calendar date: no time, no time-zone surprises
const due = Temporal.PlainDate.from("2026-10-31");
due.add({ days: 7 }).toString(); // "2026-11-07"
// A precise moment in a specific time zone
const meeting = Temporal.ZonedDateTime.from(
"2026-10-28T18:00[Asia/Kolkata]"
);
meeting.withTimeZone("Europe/London").toString();
// Durations that read like English
const gap = Temporal.Duration.from({ hours: 2, minutes: 30 });Every operation returns a new object, so nothing gets changed behind your back.
Should you drop Moment, Luxon or date-fns?
- Backend on Node.js 26: start using Temporal in new code. Once Node 26 becomes LTS in late October 2026, it's a reasonable production target.
- Frontend: browser support is still uneven. Chromium-based browsers are reported to support it, while Safari and Firefox have lagged, so check current support or use a polyfill.
- Existing apps: no need for a big-bang rewrite. Use Temporal for new code and migrate date-heavy modules as you touch them.
Booking systems, delivery estimates and IST-to-UTC conversions are where Temporal pays off most, and that's a lot of Indian business software.
Modern JavaScript, done right
At NextGen Fusion, our Node.js and web development company in Lucknow, we build on current LTS runtimes and adopt platform features like Temporal where they cut bugs.
