AI code review is now good enough to catch real bugs, missing error handling and security slips on every pull request, but it isn't good enough to approve code on its own. Treat it as a tireless first reviewer that clears the obvious issues, so the human review can focus on what the code is meant to do.
Here's what AI review reliably catches, what it misses, and how to set it up.
What AI review is good at
- Mechanical bugs: off-by-one errors, null and undefined access, missing
await, unhandled promise rejections. - Security basics: SQL built by string concatenation, secrets in code, missing input validation, overly broad CORS.
- Consistency: naming, dead code, duplicated logic, and inconsistent error handling across files.
- Tests: pointing out code paths with no test coverage.
It reviews every pull request instantly and never gets tired on a Friday evening.
What it misses
- Intent. It can't know your refund rule is wrong if the code faithfully implements the wrong rule.
- Cross-system effects. A change that's fine in isolation but breaks a webhook, a cron job or a report three services away.
- Taste. Whether the abstraction is right, or whether it's going to hurt in six months.
- False confidence. It sometimes flags non-issues confidently, and sometimes misses an issue just as confidently.
How to set it up so it raises the bar
- Run it before human review, so humans review cleaner code.
- Make it advisory, not blocking. Only tests and type checks should block a merge.
- Give it context: a short file describing your architecture, conventions and known pitfalls improves reviews noticeably.
- Track what it catches. If its comments are ignored for weeks, tune it or drop it.
The standard we hold ourselves to
At NextGen Fusion, our software development company in Lucknow, every client project gets automated tests, type checks and AI-assisted review, and a human review of every change. AI makes us faster. It doesn't replace accountability.
