AI inference (the cost of every request to a model) is becoming one of the largest and least predictable lines on a company's cloud bill. Unlike a server with a fixed monthly price, AI costs scale with every user, every message and every token of context you send. "FinOps for AI" means treating that cost the way you treat any other engineering metric: measured, owned and optimised.
Why AI bills surprise teams
- Context grows silently. Chat history, retrieved documents and system prompts get longer over time, and you pay for all of it on every request.
- One feature, many calls. An "AI answer" might involve classification, retrieval, generation and a safety check: four model calls, not one.
- Prices differ wildly. Frontier models can cost many times more per token than small models that would do the job.
- Usage isn't attributed. Nobody knows which feature or customer drives the bill.
Seven habits that cut AI costs
- Measure cost per feature and per user. Log tokens and model on every call, and tag by feature.
- Right-size the model. Use small models for routine steps and premium models only where quality measurably improves. Multi-model routing automates this.
- Trim the context. Retrieve the five most relevant chunks, not fifty. Summarise long histories.
- Cache. Identical or near-identical questions (FAQs, product questions) shouldn't hit the model twice. Use provider prompt caching where available.
- Cap output length with sensible maximums per feature.
- Batch background work. Non-urgent jobs like tagging and summarising can often use cheaper batch pricing.
- Set budgets and alerts per environment, and kill runaway loops automatically.
A useful metric
Track cost per successful outcome: per resolved support ticket, per generated product description, per qualified lead. If an AI feature costs ₹4 per resolved ticket and saves ₹40 of staff time, it's a win. If you can't measure the outcome, you can't defend the cost.
AI that pays for itself
At NextGen Fusion, our AI development company in Lucknow, cost tracking and budgets are built into every AI feature we ship, so clients see exactly what AI costs and what it returns.
