Google has confirmed that Gemini 4 is in training, but it has not given a release date. Sundar Pichai said on the Q2 earnings call: "We are now training Gemini 4, and we're being very ambitious with it." Everything beyond that, including the November–December window you'll see quoted, is an estimate based on Google's past release pattern.
I build AI features for clients, and my own chat platform runs on Google's Gemini API, so here's how I'm reading it and what I'd do if your product depends on a model.
What's actually confirmed
- Training has started. Google said in July 2026 that it had begun its "most ambitious pre-training run yet" for Gemini 4.
- Coding is a stated focus. Pichai acknowledged Google is "a bit behind" in coding and agentic coding, and named both as areas to improve.
- Releases are speeding up. Google says it is aiming to ship models at close to a monthly cadence.
What's not confirmed
The release date. 9to5Google's November-or-December estimate is reasonable inference from past launches, not a commitment. Prediction markets put high odds on a release by the end of November, but markets aren't announcements. Treat any specific date as a guess until Google publishes one.
What this means if you're building with AI
Don't hard-code one model into your product. Every few months a new model changes the price-to-quality balance. If your app calls the model through a thin layer of your own, switching from Gemini 3.5 to Gemini 4 (or to a competitor) is a config change rather than a rewrite. This is the single most useful decision in AI development right now.
Keep an evaluation set. Save 30–50 real prompts from your product with answers you consider good. When Gemini 4 lands, run them against it before switching. "Better on benchmarks" doesn't always mean better on your data.
Expect better coding agents. If Google closes the gap in agentic coding, AI-assisted development tools built on Gemini will get noticeably more capable, which affects how much a custom software project costs to build.
How we handle model upgrades
At NextGen Fusion, my web and software development company in Lucknow, we build AI features (support assistants, search and document Q&A) so that the model can be swapped without touching the rest of the app. When a model like Gemini 4 ships, clients get the upgrade after testing, not after a rebuild.
If you're planning an AI feature and want it built to outlast the next model release, here's how I work with clients.
