OpenAI's current flagship is GPT-6 Astra, launched on September 3, 2026. A follow-up called "GPT-6.1 Astra" was widely expected in October, but there is no official release, and one report says that version was cancelled after failing safety evaluations. If you saw "GPT-6.1 Astra" in a headline, treat it as unconfirmed.

What is confirmed: GPT-6 Astra

  • Launched September 3, 2026, rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, and available through OpenAI's API and AWS.
  • API pricing is reported at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
  • Context window of roughly 1.05 million tokens: enough to put a large codebase or a long contract into a single request.

What is not confirmed: GPT-6.1 Astra

Third-party trackers list a 6.1 Astra as "coming soon", and one cites an OpenAI Codex lead saying the same. A September 28 report then said the version was cancelled after failing safety evaluations. None of this comes from an OpenAI announcement. There is a cheaper sibling, GPT-6.1 Sol, described as near-Astra quality at about a fifth of the price, and that may be what some headlines are mixing up.

What this means for your business

Price matters more than the leaderboard. At $50 per million output tokens, a chatbot that writes long answers can get expensive at scale. For most business features (support replies, product descriptions, summaries) a cheaper model is good enough, and something like Sol is often the better fit. Picking the right model for each job is a large part of what keeps AI development costs predictable.

Big context changes what's practical. A million-token window means you can ask questions across a whole policy manual, catalogue or codebase without building complex retrieval first. That makes some AI prototypes much faster to build.

Build for switching. Between Astra, Sol, Gemini and open-weight models, the "best" option changes every few months. Wrap the model call so swapping providers doesn't mean rewriting your app.

How we use this at NextGen Fusion

At NextGen Fusion, our software development company in Lucknow and Mumbai, we choose models per task: a fast, cheap model for routine steps and a premium one only where quality noticeably improves. That's how an AI feature stays affordable once real customers use it.
