The HBM Memory Shortage: Why RAM Prices Are Climbing

AI chips are absorbing the world's memory supply: HBM is sold out for 2026 and DRAM prices have spiked. Why, and how it hits PCs and cloud costs.

Stacked memory chips representing the HBM memory shortage

High-bandwidth memory (HBM), the stacked memory that sits next to AI accelerators, is effectively sold out for 2026, and the scramble to make it is squeezing supply of ordinary DRAM too. Micron said its HBM capacity for 2025 and 2026 was fully booked, SK hynix reportedly described its 2026 output as essentially sold out, and TrendForce data showed conventional DRAM contract prices nearly doubling quarter-on-quarter in early 2026.

Why AI eats memory

Every AI accelerator needs large amounts of very fast memory to hold model weights and data. HBM stacks memory dies vertically and connects them right next to the processor, which is great for AI and expensive to make. Every wafer used for HBM is a wafer not used for the DRAM that goes into PCs, phones and ordinary servers.

The knock-on effects

  • PC and laptop prices: manufacturers have warned of significant price increases as memory costs rise.
  • RAM upgrades: consumer DDR5 module prices have jumped.
  • Cloud costs: memory-heavy instances and GPU capacity stay expensive while supply is tight.
  • Duration: Samsung and SK hynix warn the shortage could last through at least late 2027, and new HBM capacity takes years to build.

Figures vary between reports, so treat specific percentages as indicative.

What it means for businesses and developers

  1. Buy hardware deliberately. If you need laptops or servers, prices may not fall soon. Spec memory correctly up front rather than upgrading later.
  2. Rent AI compute rather than buying it. APIs and cloud GPUs spread the cost and risk.
  3. Write memory-efficient software. Lean apps run on smaller, cheaper instances, which matters more when memory is expensive.
