Shopify and WooCommerce AI Features: What's Worth Using

Shopify's Sidekick, AI search and agentic storefronts versus WooCommerce's plugin and custom route. What actually helps an Indian online store sell more.

Shopify has built AI into the platform itself: Sidekick as an admin assistant, smarter storefront search, and "agentic storefronts" that let products appear inside AI assistants. WooCommerce gets AI through plugins and custom integrations instead. Both can work well. Which is better depends on whether you want AI handed to you or built around how your store actually runs.

I build stores on both for Indian brands. Here's what's genuinely useful.

Shopify's AI, in brief

  • Sidekick: an assistant inside the Shopify admin that started with bulk product edits, reports and discounts. Shopify has since added proactive suggestions, integrations with review, email, loyalty and subscription apps, and voice and screen sharing.
  • Smarter search: better handling of typos, vague phrasing and intent, so "red saree for wedding" finds red wedding sarees.
  • Agentic storefronts: products discoverable inside assistants like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. Some of this is still rolling out, so check what's available in India before planning around it.
  • Testing tools: an AI store builder, simulated AI shoppers to test changes, and scheduled rollouts with A/B testing.

WooCommerce's approach

WooCommerce doesn't put an AI assistant at the centre of the product. Instead you choose plugins or build integrations: AI product descriptions, semantic search, chat assistants trained on your catalogue and policies, and WhatsApp support bots. That's more setup, but you control the model, the data and the cost, with no platform deciding for you.

What actually moves sales

From the stores I've built, these AI features pay off fastest:

  1. Search that understands Indian shoppers, including Hinglish, misspellings, and "under ₹2000".
  2. A support assistant that answers sizing, shipping, COD and return questions instantly, on site and on WhatsApp.
  3. Product description drafting for large catalogues, always edited by a person.
  4. Clean structured product data, which is what AI assistants and Google both read.

Flashy AI features without these basics don't sell more.
