In May 2026, Tata Electronics and ASML, the Dutch company whose lithography machines every advanced fab depends on, signed a strategic partnership for Tata's 300mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat: India's first large front-end chip fab. ASML will supply lithography tools and support the fab's ramp-up, and the agreement also covers workforce training, local supply-chain development and long-term R&D. It was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.

Reports differ on the exact signing date (mid- or late May), so I've kept it to "May 2026".

What the Dholera fab will make

  • A roughly $11 billion investment, as reported.
  • Mature-node chips, reported at 28nm to 110nm, for automotive, mobile, industrial and power applications. Not the cutting-edge chips inside AI accelerators, but the chips almost every product needs.
  • 300mm (12-inch) wafers, the modern industry standard.

Why this is a big deal for India

  1. Front-end fabrication is the hardest part of the chip supply chain. Until now, India's chip manufacturing has been packaging and testing, like the plants in Sanand.
  2. Mature nodes matter. Cars, appliances and industrial equipment run on these chips, and the 2021 shortages showed how fragile supply can be.
  3. Ecosystem effects: suppliers, engineering jobs, training programmes and research partnerships grow around a fab.

The software and services opportunity

Every fab and industrial cluster creates demand for software: manufacturing execution dashboards, supplier portals, recruitment and training platforms, and B2B websites for the many firms that serve the industry.

At NextGen Fusion, our web and software development company in Lucknow, we build B2B websites, RFQ platforms and dashboards for manufacturers and industrial suppliers. MariBiz, a procurement marketplace, is one example.
