Many of Kolkata's best businesses are decades old and built on reputation: handloom saree houses, sweet shops, wholesalers in Burrabazar, bookshops on College Street. Taking a business like that online isn't about looking modern. It's about letting customers outside the neighbourhood buy what loyal customers already trust, with a catalogue that does the product justice and a checkout that works for everyone.
What a traditional Kolkata business needs online
A catalogue that matches how the product is sold. Bengal handloom (tant, jamdani, Baluchari) is bought on weave, fabric, colour and occasion, so the store should let people filter by exactly those things. A generic "sarees" category with 400 products in it loses buyers.
Photos that show the craft. Drape shots, close-ups of the weave and the border, and the fall of the fabric. For handloom, the photography sells more than the copy does.
Checkout for every kind of buyer. UPI for younger shoppers, COD for first-time buyers, and international cards if you ship abroad. Bengali families outside India are a real market for handloom and festival wear.
WhatsApp ordering. Many family businesses already sell this way. The website should make it easier: share a product link straight into WhatsApp, and get order notifications there.
Seasonal collections. Durga Puja, Poila Baisakh and wedding season drive most of the year's sales. The site needs collection pages you can set up quickly and feature on the homepage, without calling a developer each time.
Stores I've built for this kind of business
- New Saraswati Saree Centre: a WooCommerce store for 40+ handwoven sarees (cotton, muslin and Paithani), with filtering, festive collection pages, testimonials and multi-gateway payments.
- Samaraha: premium silk sarees (Banarasi, Tussar and hand-printed) with wishlist, comparison and UPI checkout.
- Sitara Vastram: limited-edition ethnic wear with style reels, WhatsApp support and COD.
- Anchal Weaves, Kalamohini and more: see all my live sites.
Sweets and food businesses
Food is harder online than sarees because of shelf life and delivery windows. What works: a small, well-photographed range of items that travel well (dry sweets, gift boxes, packaged snacks); clear dispatch days and delivery estimates; pincode checks that block areas you can't reach in time; and gift-box ordering for festivals and corporate orders.
Bengali and English
If your customers search in Bengali, the site can carry Bengali product names and pages alongside English. AI makes the first draft of translations fast, but a native speaker should review anything customers will read. Machine-translated product copy shows.
Working together
I'm based in Lucknow and work with Kolkata businesses remotely. If the business isn't used to running a website, I'll set it up so the family or staff can add products, change prices and see orders without help, and show them how.
Questions Kolkata businesses ask
We already sell on WhatsApp. Why build a website?
A website lets people outside your network find you through Google, browse without messaging, and pay up front. WhatsApp stays your support and repeat-order channel.
Can we sell internationally?
Yes, with international payments, shipping rates by country and prices that make sense abroad. Customs and courier choice need planning first.
What platform is best for us?
For most traditional retail, WooCommerce: no per-order fees and you own everything. See the WooCommerce service page, or the India guide for other cities.
